Celta Vigo 2-2 Barcelona: La Liga Leaders Extend Unbeaten Run Despite Much Changed Side

At a difficult ground against a resilient opposition, Barcelona just did enough at Balaidos to keep their unbeaten run going, with a 2-2 draw against Celta Vigo.

Goals from Ousmane Dembélé and Paco Alcacer clinched a point with ten men, despite a Jonathan Castro equaliser and an Iago Aspas deflection which hit his hand.

Barcelona started on the front foot and it didn't take long for the first big chance of the game. Linking up well with Philippe Coutinho, Denis Suarez missed an easy opportunity with the goal gaping. Teed up by the Brazilian playmaker, the former Manchester City starlet dragged his shot wide in a dominant start for the visitors.

Celta Vigo immediately fired back with the exuberant crowd behind them, as La Liga's leading Spanish marksman Iago Aspas stung the gloves of Marc-André ter Stegen, carving open the Barcelona defence with ease. With the goal at his mercy, the ex-Liverpool man wasted a golden opportunity to take the lead in a thrilling end-to-end start.

Without talisman Lionel Messi and the pressing of Luis Suarez, Celta Vigo had a free reign to take control of the match, with Danish duo Daniel Wass and Pione Sisto pulling the strings in midfield.
They say the top sides punish you when you fail to make your chances pay, and the league leaders did just that to take the lead. After a poor pass by defender Jonathan Castro, Coutinho took full advantage to tee up French star Dembélé, whose sumptuous left foot volley fizzed into the back of the net.

With an almost instant reply, Castro made amends for his earlier mistake by getting on the score sheet with the final kick of the half. Breaking up the play in midfield, Celta Vigo attacked the lacklustre Barcelona defence at pace as Maximiliano Gómez got to the byline. Firing a fantastic ball across the six yard box, an unmarked Castro had the simple task of a tap-in.
Barcelona's best chance of the half against the run of play came from an unlikely source. A fantastic corner whipped in to the back post was thumped against the woodwork by Paulinho, rising high to head a shot, which easily beat goalkeeper Sergio Alvarez, routed to the spot.

With the visitors committing men forward, Celta Vigo countered excellently as Brais Mendez led the charge. In a five-on-three situation, Los Celestes couldn't capatilise with Mendez missing a simple finish, bending his shot past the post.

Sensing blood, the cultured left foot of Mendez again tested ter Stegen, forcing an accomplished save from the German international, whose fingertips kept out a promising start to the match for the mid-table La Liga side, in ninth place before the match began.

Barcelona Players Now Believe Only One Team Can Win the UCL Following Their Shock Loss Against Roma

After winning the first leg of the Champions League quarter final 4-1, many people believed that Ernesto Valverde's Barcelona had all but guaranteed their place in the semi-finals, with Roma succumbing to two own goals, as well as strikes from Gerard Pique and Luis Suarez.

Going into the second leg in Rome, the hosts faced an uphill battle as they needed to overturn a three goal deficit - a feat only ever achieved thrice before in the Champions League - against one of Europe's most talented sides.

However, with the help of the momentous support from the fans at the Stadio Olimpico and a great deal of belief, Roma were able to score three goals without reply in order to shock the five-time European champions and ensure that, once again, they would not be lifting the coveted trophy this season.

Goals from Edin Dzeko, Daniele De Rossi and Kostas Manolas saw Barcelona suffer their most agonising capitulation on the European stage in recent memory, and the Blaugrana players were clearly dejected by their performance.

According to reports from Spanish news outlet Sport, Barcelona's flight home from Rome was almost silent, with the players in a state of disbelief and shell shock. The atmosphere of the flight was likened to that of a 'ghost plane' with barely anyone uttering a word.

However, there was one phrase that was uttered more than once aboard the flight as Valverde's men returned to Catalonia, with a number of players convinced the had 'delivered the Champions League to Real Madrid'.

A slightly disrespectful assessment considering there remain three games separating Los Blancos from their third successive Champions League title, and the teams remaining are certainly more than capable of upsetting the odds and removing Madrid from contention.

In fact, of all the remaining teams in the competition, Real Madrid have the worst defensive record at home, having conceded seven goals on home soil in comparison to Liverpool's two, Bayern Munich's one and Roma's zero.

There is certainly a case for why any of the remaining three teams can knock Madrid out, as such Barcelona's appraisal of the semi-finalists, and subsequent prediction, may be incorrect

Barcelona 3-0 Chelsea (Aggregate 4-1): 5 Talking Points

Lionel Messi masterclass takes Barcelona to the last 8 of the Champions League at the expense of Chelsea and there's plenty to talk about

Showing up for a fight is one thing but landing a punch is an entirely different story. Ask Chelsea. Though the scoreline that reads 3-0 is a bit too criminal and heavy to fit in their travel bags for all the labour they generously meted out, Antonio Conte's men succumbed largely to the genius of football's greatest artist who goes by the name of Lionel Messi. It took all of 127 seconds for the man, to whom the giant tifo in the stands that read 'God Save the King' was dedicated, to go get the first goal of the night. Chelsea toiled to claw back into the game but they were pushed further back into the boondocks as Leo Messi took it upon himself to render 5 Chelsea players invalid before teeing up Ousmane Dembele for the Blaugrana's second of the night. He then put the locks on the gates Chelsea were threatening to kick down by nutmegging Courtois a second time after darting into the box as fast as a hare chasing a sentient carrot to usher Barcelona into the last 8 of the competition for the 11th consecutive year. But it was not all that easy for Barcelona and thanks to the relentlessness of Antonio Conte's men, the night never ran short on excitement. There's plenty to talk about, so let's dive right in.

#5 Ernesto Valverde gets his starting XI spot on

Heck, it is so hard to find a photo on the internet where Valverde looks distraught. Gauged by many as someone who got lucky punching above his weight at the onset of the season, Valverde's calm demeanour was not often looked at as a measure of the man's sagacity.
But he has already led this Barcelona side to great things and with quite a few options at his disposal and a result to obtain, Valverde got it spot on with his team selection.
Andres Iniesta went through a late assessment on the day and was okayed to play and Valverde deployed the Spanish genius to take charge of the midfield and alongside Busquets and Rakitic, he kept things simple and ticking in the centre.
There was also the question of using Dembele on the right flank but the kid proved his worth in the game against Malaga and repaid the gaffer's trust by scoring the second goal of the night and being a constant thorn in the flesh of the Premier League's defending champions.
Dembele had no qualms about tracking back and even put in a sensational last-ditch tackle to steal the ball from Alonso just as the Spanish wing-back looked all set to pull one back for Chelsea.
Iniesta is not at a stage in his career where he can return from an injury and work for 90 minutes at a stretch and with the game looking safe and settled, Valverde chose to send Paulinho in for the veteran.
The Brazilian put in a decent shift and even tested Courtois with a towering header in the final quarter of the game.
Busquets came off sore after Moses crashed into him near the centre circle and Valverde gave a run out to Gomes who was welcomed to the ground with a huge roar - which was heartening to see after the midfielder opened up about going through 'hell' after being jeered by his own fans at Barcelona.

Lionel Messi Left 'Angry' as Reports Claim Barcelona Star Could Make Manchester United Switch

Lionel Messi is said to be furious after learning that defender Samuel Umtiti could be set for a Barcelona exit.

Spanish publication Diario Gol have reported that Manchester United have agreed provisional terms with the 24-year-old. Umtiti is believed to be happy to stay at Barcelona, but wants to see his £70,000-a-week salary doubled.

Diego Maradona Revealed as Inspiration Behind Lionel Messi's Deadly Free-kick Technique

Former Argentina fitness coach Fernando Signorini has revealed how Albiceleste legend Diego Maradona helped compatriot Lionel Messi perfect his free-kick taking abilities.

Barcelona stretched their lead at the top of La Liga to eight points on Sunday after they beat 2nd-placed Atletico Madrid 1-0 at the Camp Nou. The only goal of the game came in the 26th minute when Messi bent a sumptuous free-kick past John Oblak for the 600th goal of his career.

The strike means that Messi has now scored three free-kicks in his last three games for Barca. Since returning from the La Liga's winter break, the Argentine has scored five free-kicks from 33 attempts leaving him with a conversion rate of 15% - the average for Europe's top five leagues is just six per cent in comparison.

Speaking in an interview with LaSexta (via Marca), Signorini has revealed how the Argentine international wasn't always as clinical from dead ball situations and needed some inspiration from another Argentina legend: "I started walking to where Diego was, and at the same moment I see Messi place the ball down."

"He takes three shots and misses all three and turned to us with a look of clear frustration. He turns towards the dressing room and I shout 'no' before hugging him and telling him that the best player in the world can't leave a training session like that.

"Diego arrives and they talk to each other, the world seems to stop at that moment. He places the ball in the same place and then gives some very paternal words. He told him not to take his foot off the ball so quickly when he takes a free kick."

Lionel Messi Just One Goal Away From Incredible Goalscoring Landmark Ahead of Atleti Clash

Barcelona legend Lionel Messi can reach an outstanding career landmark if he finds the back of the net against Atlético Madrid on Sunday.

The 30-year-old is just one goal away from reaching a tally of 600 goals with Barcelona and Argentina, his latest of which was a brilliant free-kick in a 1-1 draw on the road to Las Palmas

Messi currently has 538 goals in Barcelona colours, of which 372 have come in La Liga, and the Argentine forward has found the back of the net a further 61 times with his national team.

Messi has also registered an incredible number of assists throughout his career, with 245 coming with the Blaugrana and 42 for the Albiceleste.
The long-running debate over who is better between Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo can't even be up for discussion with this latest stat as Real Madrid's Portuguese superstar took a further two years to reach the same amount of career goals.

Unless Barca's No. 10 fails to find the back of the net until 2020 - which let's face it just is not going to happen - then even the most militant of Ronaldo supporters will struggle to argue against Messi's superior goalscoring exploits.

Lionel Messi has concern over Barcelona teammate as form takes drastic dip

Eyebrows were raised when Barcelona made one signing in particular last summer, and now his recent poor form has reportedly raised concern for Lionel Messi.

Given that the Catalan giants remain top of the La Liga table and are still in the hunt for Copa del Rey and Champions League glory, there surely isn’t too much for them to be worried about.

However, according to Diario Gol, as re-reported by The Express, Messi has become concerned by Paulinho’s dip in form after he had made such an impressive start to life at the Nou Camp.

After a difficult stint at Tottenham followed by a move to China, the Brazilian midfielder’s move to Barcelona would understandably have been met with scepticism.
Particularly considering when the club splashed out €40m to sign him, as per BBC Sport, it seemed like a very risky decision as the 29-year-old hadn’t shown a great deal to suggest that he was capable of making that kind of step up in class.
To his credit, he bagged eight goals and two assists earlier in the season, but it wasn’t going to take much for the scrutiny to start up again as seen in the report above.
Diario Gol claim that Messi is concerned about how the Brazilian has been unable to have a similar impact since Luiz Suarez returned to form and Philippe Coutinho arrived at the club.
Paulinho’s last La Liga goal came on January 14, while he has failed to net in the Champions League this season and Barcelona may well need him to step up against Chelsea in the second leg at the Nou Camp after he missed a great opportunity in the first meeting.
Whether this is the real level that Paulinho can operate at and his early-season form was merely just a honeymoon period, or if it’s just a case of having to rediscover his best form, it seems the pressure is building on him both outside the club and within the dressing room, as per this report.

Barcelona suffer major transfer scare, €100m target could snub them for Real Madrid

Barcelona are reportedly running the risk of missing out on a top summer target due to their transfer tactics, according to reports in Spain.
The Catalan giants have spent heavily in the last two windows, signing Ousmane Dembele last summer for a fee that could total £135.5m, as per BBC Sport, while a further £146m was spent to prise Philippe Coutinho away from Liverpool last month, as noted by Sky Sports.

In turn, Ernesto Valverde has already seen big additions arrive, and it’s worked well as they continue to lead the way in the league, while they still have strong hopes of winning both the Copa del Rey and Champions League.
Reports suggest that the big spending could be followed up with another marquee addition this summer too, with Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann heavily linked with a switch to the Nou Camp.
However, according to Diario Gol, as re-reported by The Express, the Frenchman could snub Barcelona due to their questionable transfer tactics aimed at unsettling his current situation at Atleti, while it’s added that there is a rival offer from Real Madrid to consider too which could spell trouble.

La Liga President Confirms Luis Suarez Will Be 'Punished' for Controversial Actions in Girona Game

La Liga President Javier Tebas has hinted that Barcelona striker Luis Suarez could be handed an extended ban by the Spanish football authorities, following his apparent attempts to get himself a yellow card in Saturday's 6-1 thrashing of Girona.

Had Suarez - who had already netted a hat-trick in the match - gone into the book in the closing moments of the rout, it would have been his fifth yellow of the season, meaning the Uruguayan would have been suspended for Thursday's match with Las Palmas; before being available again for when league leaders Barcelona host second placed Atletico Madrid at the Nou Camp on Sunday.

Weighing in on the issue, La Liga president Javier Tebas has now suggested that Suarez, who was not actually booked against Girona, could be set for a longer suspension, with Football Espana reporting that Tebas has told Spanish press: “Luis Suarez should be punished for intentionally looking for a ban.

Barcelona 6-1 Girona: Messi Masterclass Gives Barca Easy Victory to Put Pressure on Chasing Atletico

Barcelona restored their ten point gap at the top of La Liga, with a dominant display against their newfound regional rivals Girona in front of the biggest Nou Camp crowd this season, and put the pressure on Atletico Madrid to follow suit in their crunch clash with Sevilla on Sunday night.
Despite a Luis Suarez hat-trick, it was the diminutive magician who shone most brightly in the face of an uncharacteristically porous Girona defence.
Amazingly, it was the visitors who drew first blood, going ahead inside the first three minutes, with Portu capitalising on some lackadaisical defending from Samuel Umtiti.

Anthony Lozano's speculative run off the left flank looked to be over after a poor touch, but Umtiti's dithering was pounced on by Portu, who's effort cannoned in via the inside of both posts.

However, Barcelona restored parity almost immediately, with Lionel Messi given too much time to pick out Luis Suarez's probing run behind Girona's back three. Despite the Uruguayan's shot being somewhat scuffed, the pace of the move was too much for a stationary Bono between the sticks.

While Girona showed their willingness to press Barcelona, and ability to capitalise on any loose passing from their opponents, it was Barca who unsurprisingly took the reins in the encounter.

As goes hand in hand with such implications, it was Lionel Messi who held the primary grip, emboldened by the kind of space and time he was not sanctioned at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.

Bad news for Barcelona: key ace set to miss five games for Spanish giants following agreement with manager Ernesto Valverde

  • Barcelona are still going on strong on all fronts this campaign
  • Ace has made an agreement with Barca manager Ernesto Valverde
  • Agreement means that player will sit out five games for the club during the remainder of this season
  • SEE MORE: Barcelona star boasts brilliant stats against Chelsea, BT Sport pundits full of praise
Barcelona have been dealt some bad news after it was reported that key star Lionel Messi is set to miss five games for the Spanish side following an agreement being achieved with Ernesto Valverde.
This is according to Spanish news outlet Diario Gol, who are reporting that the Argentine international has made an agreement with the Barca boss, which states that the player will sit out five of the away league games that the club have left this campaign.
The news outlet are also reporting that the Valverde is keen to win his side’s next three league matches, however after that, Messi will sit out away ties to Malaga, Sevilla, Celta Vigo, Deportivo and Levante.
Not having Messi for these five matches will seriously harm Barcelona, as the forward has shown this season that he is truly capable of doing everything possible on a football pitch.
So far this campaign, the Argentine superstar has been in fine form, with the player managing to rack up an impressive total of 28 goals and 15 assists in 38 appearances for the Blaugrana in all competitions.

As his career’s gone on, Messi has had to seriously change the way he goes about playing. Now that the forward is in his 30’s, he has o conserve his energy a lot more than ever before.
As well as the departure of Neymar along with the fact that Andres Iniesta isn’t getting any younger, Messi has been made to play a lot deeper for Barca than he ever has done before, which has seen him become the creative force behind Ernesto Valverde’s side.

Following this news, it’ll be interesting to see how Barca get on without a player that has often been described as the greatest of all time.

Lionel Messi unimpressed with snub, Barcelona target eyes Real Madrid move

Barcelona star Lionel Messi has reportedly been left feeling ‘betrayed’ by compatriot Paulo Dybala over his desire to play for Real Madrid.
The 24-year-old has emerged as one of the top players in Europe after his move to Juventus in 2015, as he’s gone on to score 59 goals in 122 games for the Turin giants and has won back-to-back Serie A titles.
However, according to Diario Gol, as re-reported by The Express, despite being linked with a move to the Nou Camp, Dybala would choose joining Madrid and playing alongside Cristiano Ronaldo instead.
Naturally, such a decision would likely disappointment his fellow Argentine, although there is method behind the supposed madness as Dybala and Messi haven’t clicked on the international stage when playing alongside each other for Argentina so it would raise doubts over their chemistry at club level too.
Having said that though, it will still be a major concern if the Juve forward was to join their direct rivals as it would certainly strengthen Los Blancos at a time when they are in need of reinforcements.
Zinedine Zidane’s men currently sit 17 points adrift of leaders Barca, while they’ve already crashed out of the Copa del Rey and face a tough task in the Champions League when they take on Paris Saint-Germain.
Karim Benzema has scored just six goals in 25 appearances this season, Cristiano Ronaldo turned 33 this month and Gareth Bale has had his well-documented injury problems in recent years.
In turn, Dybala, 24, would be an excellent long-term solution to the problems facing Madrid in the final third, and if the report above is accurate in that he wants to play for them rather than with Messi at Barcelona, then the reigning Spanish and European champions should surely be doing their utmost to sign him and significantly strengthen their team.
